Dans des conditions venteuses d'aujourd'hui, Taylor Canfield (ISV) US One a défendu avec succès son titre de vainqueur du Chicago match Cup, le seul événement de l’Alpari world match racing tour aux États-Unis (AWMRT). Mathieu Richard (FRA) Lunajets team prend la 3ième Place.

L’équipe de Canfield se compose de: tacticien Rod Dawson, régleur Mike Rehe et Plage avant Hayden Goodrick.
Canfield a commencé fort dans les 15-20 noeud de brise du nord qui soufflaient et oscillait toute la journée, dominant tous les matches de la première à trois points des demi-finales contre Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Sailing Team Hansen sur le score de 3 0.
Williams faisait de même, remportant ses deux premiers matchs contre Mathieu Richard (FRA) LunaJets, mais l'équipe française réussissait a gagner le troisième match pour porter le score à 2-1. Cependant, en match 4 Williams a de nouveau pris le contrôle pour gagner sa place dans la finale 3-1.
Williams semblait lancé pour poursuivre sur sa lancée en finale; prenant le meilleur départ dans le premier match. Mais sur la dernière moitié de la dernière course, Canfield a réduit l'écart à zéro, puis engageant Williams, et le lofant, mais ce dernier réussissait à rester à l'écart. Williams a ensuite réussi à augmenter son avance pour empanner en tribord et lofer durement Canfield qui écopait d’une pénalité pour ne se pas maintenir à l'écart. Un dernier empannage de canfield pour revenir sur la ligne d'arrivée lui a valu une autre pénalité, cédant ainsi la victoire à Williams 1-0.
Le deuxième match ou comment gagner malgré 2 pénalités. Williams prenait à nouveau le contrôle dans le pré-départ, poussant Canfield sur la ligne trop tôt qui prenait une pénalité drapeau rouge pour ne pas se maintenir à l'écart et en tirant un avantge. Après avoir purgé celle-ci, Canfield a suivi Williams dans le premier tour, une oscillation à droite transformait ce bord en une parade le ramenant au contact et enfin en tête égalisant 1-1.
En petite finale, Richard a mené dans presque chaque tour des deux matches contre Hansen gagnant sur le score de 2-0 une fort belle 3ième troisième place de l’étape de Chicago et la 2ième place du Général du championnat Alpari WMRT.
Dans le troisième match de la finale, Williams a prenait le côté droit du début et prenant la tête ne lâchait pas le contrôle, aidé par un décalage vers la droite qui privait Canfield d’ opportunités de dépassement. Sur la dernière descente Williams semblait raisonnablement l’emporter, jusqu'à ce que Canfield prenant une bouffée d’air réussissait à combler l'écart et a engager Williams sous le vent, et en vertu des règles de lofer son adversaire. Selon les Umpirers Bill Edgerton, Russell Green et Tom Rinda, Williams,n'était pas dans la zone des deux longueurs de la bouée de ligne et ne s’est pas maintenu à l’écart empannant pour essayer de franchir l’arrivée avant Canfield qui l’emporte et porte son score à 2-1.
Dans le dernier match, Canfield voulait la droite et a défendu avec succès ce côté . Williams n'a jamais eu la chance de prendre de l'avantage . Même avec une chasse dans un croisement, Canfield augmentait tout simplement son avance . Avec une brise en légère diminution, les grandes bouffées des matchs précédents ne sont plus disponibles pour donner au bateau de derrière une occasion de rattraper le leader, Canfield a continué à naviguer confortablement jusqu’à la fin remportant la finale de la Chicago match race cup 3-1.
"C'était fantastique de défendre notre titre devant l'ensemble de nos familles et amis», a déclaré un Canfield exalté. "Et je dois vraiment remercier mon équipage pour cette performance incroyable cette semaine en ne perdant seulement que deux matchs. Chicago, USA (18 septembre 2014): Aujourd'hui vent et vagues étaient bien présent permettant du match racing serré, avec des bateaux plus rapide sur le Alpari World Match Racing Tour, les équipages se sont battus pour les quatre premières donnant accès automatiquement à aux 1/4 de finales.
Taylor Canfield (US One), Ian Williams (GAC Pindar), Pierre Antoine Morvan (Vannes Agglo Sailing Team) et Phil Robertson (Waka Racing) ont ainsi pris les 4 premières places tant convoitées. Les huit équipaes restants vont se retrouver en repêchage demain afin de se qualifier pour les quatre dernières places, tandis que les quatre vainqueurs d'aujourd'hui vont attendre de voir a qui ils sont confrontés en quarts de finale.
Aujourd'hui, les deux meilleurs de la veille ont continué sur leur lancée victorieuse finissant en tête. Taylor Canfield (ISV) confirmant sa bonne forme du moment en étant pratiquement invaincu tombant seulement face à Phil Robertson (NZL) Waka Racing.

Pierre-Antoine Morvan (FRA) Vannes Agglo Sailing Team qui a remporté haut la main le Grand Slam USA le mois dernier ici même, n’avait pas bien débuté les qualifications cette fois-ci , terminant la journée d’hier avec seulement deux points à son tableau de bord, a réussit aujourd’hui a éléever son niveau de jeu pour prendre la 3ième place.
Le vent a à tourné pour l'équipe française à partir de flight 10, avec des victoires successives acquises contre Mathieu Richard (FRA) LunaJets, puis Don Wilson (Etats-Unis), puis Tom Slingsby (AUS). Après une pause dans les deux prochains flight. Morvan a continué avec des victoires contre Hansen et Chris Steele (NZL) a se mettre en place pour un match de confrontation finale dans le dernier flight :
Ce dernier match était critique contre Eric Monnin (SUI) Sailbox team, qui n’ était pas dans un grand jour avec seulement trois victoires, mais il y avait beaucoup de combat gauche en lui même à la fin d'une longue journée. Morvan s’imposait donc devant Monnin.
Le repêchage se poursuit demain à 0930.

le champions en titre de la Coupe du match Chicago, Taylor Canfield US One (ISV) a montré qu'ils n’a rien perdu aucun de son savoir faire, en tête du peloton dans la première journée de la Qualifying Series invaincu sur un score de 4-0.
Ian Williams GAC Pindar (GBR) le leader actuel du championnat du monde "Alpari World Match Racing Tour " a perdu un match contre Bjorn Hansen Hansen Sailing Team (SWE) de 3-1, Mathieu Richard Lunajets (FRA), Phil Robertson Racing Waka (NZL) et Joachim Aschenbrenner équipe Trifork (DEN)sont à égalité sur le même score.
Après un retard ce matin en attente d'une brise légère de 6-7 nœuds sur le lac Michigan, six flight ont été courues aujourd'hui, 11 restant pour terminer cette étape de la compétition entre les douze équipes de neuf pays.
Les conditions étaient bien adaptés pour l’ équipe américaine, qui a remporté la Chicago Cup Match l'année dernière, mais plus récemment, le Grand Slam de chicago Grade 2 le mois dernier.
"Nous courons ici depuis de nombreuses années", a déclaré Canfield, "mais nous apprenons encore quelque chose à toutes les courses. Aujourd'hui, nous avons le sentiment d’être peu faible dans nos descentes sous le vent, nous avons du faire quelques ajustements sur la base de ce que nous avons vu sur d'autres bateaux ".

Chicago, USA (21 Sept. 2014): In a masterful display of tenacious match race sailing in today’s blustery conditions, Taylor Canfield (ISV) Team US One have successfully defended their Chicago Match Cup title, the only US event on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT). Canfield’s US One team consists of tactician Rod Dawson, trimmer Mike Rehe and bowman Hayden Goodrick.
Canfield started strong in the 15-20+ knot northerly breeze that puffed and shifted all day, dominating all matches in the first-to-three point Semi Final against Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Hansen Sailing Team and amassing a convincing winning score of 3-0. Williams looked like he would do the same by winning his first two matches against Mathieu Richard (FRA) LunaJets, but then the French team took the third match to bring the score to 2-1. However, in Match 4 Williams once again took control early and kept control to earn his berth in the Finals 3-1.
The momentum Williams had gained in that last match seemed it would carry through to the Finals when taking the start and early lead in the first match. But on the last half of the last run to the finish, Canfield closed the gap down to nil and then got an overlap and control of Williams, who managed to stay clear in hard spinnaker luff from Canfield. Williams then managed to build enough separation to gybe back to starboard at Canfield, luff him hard, and force a penalty on him for not keeping clear. One last gybe back by Canfield on the finish line only earned him another penalty, thus ceding the win to Williams. Score: Williams 1-0.
The second match saw Williams back in control in the pre-start, not only pushing Canfield over the line early at the start, but Canfield earning a red flag penalty for not keeping clear either. After taking his obligatory turn, Canfield was left to follow Williams around the first lap, especially after a right shift on the first run made that leg a parade. But being clever on the last beat put Canfield close, then into the lead that he managed to defend to make the score even at 1-1.
In Petit Final action, Richard led in nearly every turn of both matches against Hansen to win this series for third place 2-0.
In the third match of the Finals, Williams took the right side of the start and never let go control of this match, and was helped by a right shift that deprived Canfield of any passing opportunities. Williams’s narrow lead on the last leg to the finish looked reasonably safe, until Canfield rode a puff to close the gap, overlapped Williams to leeward, and under Tour rules was allowed to luff. According to match umpires Bill Edgerton, Russell Green and Tom Rinda, Williams did not keep clear, and was not in the two-length zone at the pin end of the finish, and therefore earned a penalty before crash gybing to try to get to the line before Canfield. Score: Canfield 2-1.
In the last match, Canfield wanted and took the right and successfully defended this side to where Williams never had a chance to get ahead. Even in one dial-down defence on the first beat, Canfield simply extended his lead more. With the breeze dropping slightly, and the big puffs of earlier matches no longer available to enable the trailing boat any opportunity to catch the leaders, Canfield went on to sail comfortably to the finish and his successful defence of the Chicago Match Cup.
“It was fantastic to defend this event in front of all of our families and friends,” said an elated Canfield. “And I really have to thank my team for an incredible performance this week in only losing two matches. In these conditions when you’re behind never out of it, and this team is incredible: when we were behind they only pushed harder for us to win.”

FOUR GO THROUGH TO QUARTER FINALS
Chicago, USA (Sept. 18, 2014): As the wind came up today so did the tight match racing action in the second day of Qualifying at the Chicago Match Cup, the only US stop on the Alpari World Match Racing Tour. As the boats got faster and faster with the building breeze and waves, so did the competitiveness, as teams fought hard for the top four slots to automatically advance to the next stage of the event.
Securing their Quarter Finals places are defending Chicago Match Cup champion Taylor Canfield (US One), Ian Williams (GAC Pindar), Pierre Antoine Morvan (Vannes Agglo Sailing Team) and Phil Robertson (Waka Racing). The remaining eight teams will try again in tomorrow’s Repechage to take the final four places, while the four victors from today will wait to see who they face in the Quarter Finals.
Today the top two teams from yesterday continued their winning ways and ended up well clear of the field of twelve teams from nine nations. Taylor Canfield (ISV) US One continued to lead the pack from yesterday, achieving a nearly undefeated record by falling only to Phil Robertson (NZL) Waka Racing and accumulating 10 points.
Next on the leaderboard was Ian Williams (GBR) GAC Pindar, who fell to fellow Tour Card holders Canfield and Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Hansen Sailing Team to score 9 points and get his invitation to the next stage.
But the remaining two slots could only be determined by tie-break, and only by the results of an intense shoot-out, all-out match in the final flight of Qualifying.
Pierre-Antoine Morvan (FRA) Vannes Agglo Sailing Team was not having a great start to Qualifying, coming into the day with only a two points on his scorecard and not looking strong despite impressive winning results in some recent ISAF Grade 2 events in the US in the past month.
But the tide started turning (even here in non-tidal waters) for the French team starting in Flight 10, with successive victories earned against Mathieu Richard (FRA) LunaJets (this would prove fortuitous), then Don Wilson (USA), then Tom Slingsby (AUS) Team Tom Slingsby. After a break in the next two flights, Morvan’s winning ways continued with wins earned against Hansen and Chris Steele (NZL) 36 Below, setting themselves up for a final showdown match in the last flight: if they won this match, they would tie Robertson and Richard on 7 points, but since both Morvan and Robertson defeated Richard, then they would go through and leave Richard to fight again in the Repechage.
This critical last match was against Eric Monnin (SUI) Team Sailbox, who was not having a great day on only three wins, but had plenty of fight left in him even at the very end of a long day. It looked as though Morvan would be in control, having won the right side of the first beat, but then a close cross by the Swiss at the first top mark put Morvan behind for the first run to the leeward gate.
Aggressive pumping and sail trim on the run brought Morvan nearly even to Monnin for the next beat, and at the top of the leg the two tangled, leaving Morvan with a penalty and allowing Monin to continue with a slim lead for the final run to the finish.
Morvan would not give up, and impressive downwind pace and positioning put them within striking range of the Swiss, first to one length, then down to one meter, and finally overlapped to leeward. With Rule 17 suspended on the AWMRT, this effectively pinned out Monnin, who was unable to gybe for the finish, and with nothing to lose but his penalty, Morvan drove the pair beyond the layline to the pin.
Monnin tried nonetheless to gybe, collided with Morvan, earning himself a penalty for his efforts, which then offset Morvan’s to wipe the slate clean. But by doing this deliberately to take control at the finish line, Monnin received another penalty, and thereby ceded the match to Morvan.
The Repechage continues tomorrow at 0930.

Taylor Canfield and Team USone undefeated on Day 1 of Qualifying at Chicago Match Cup ALPARI WORLD MATCH RACING TOUR
Chicago, USA (17th Sept 2014): As defending champions of the Chicago Match Cup, Taylor Canfield US One (ISV) today have shown they’ve lost none of their prowess at this venue, leading the pack in Day One of the Qualifying Series on an undefeated 4-0 record. Current Tour leader Ian Williams GAC Pindar (GBR) lost his match to Bjorn Hansen Hansen Sailing Team (SWE) for a 3-1 record, a record also held by Mathieu Richard Lunajets (FRA), Phil Robertson Waka Racing (NZL) and Joachim Aschenbrenner Team Trifork (DEN).
After a morning delay awaiting a light 6-7 knot breeze to fill from Lake Michigan, six flights of this series were sailed today, with 11 remaining to complete this stage of the competition among twelve teams from nine nations.
The conditions were well-suited to the US One team, who have won not only last year’s Chicago Match Cup, but more recently the Chicago Grand Slam Grade 2 event last month.
“We have raced here for many years,” said Canfield, “but still learn something every time we race. Today we were feeling a little weak in our downwind legs, but made some adjustments based on what we saw on some other boats.”
This helped Canfield in his last match of the day against Pierre Antoine Morvan Vannes Agglo Sailing Team (FRA), where he trailed around the first top mark, but gained on the run and managed to take the lead by holding out the French team from getting to the leeward gate.
“Its still early, this is a tough crowd, but it’s good to have some points on the board,” concluded Canfield.
While the wind was light, the action was not, and several matches were decided in part by penalties assessed by the umpires. Just moments into the Williams-Hansen match, for example, an altercation after the start not only had Williams penalized but earning a red flag for a acquiring control of the match from the incident. This required him to do his penalty turn immediately, and thereby cede control of the match back to Hansen, who was able to maintain his lead and take the point.
Asked about the incident, Williams said simply “We screwed up.”
Each of these matches will be important once this stage of 17 flights is completed, as only four teams go through to the Quarter-Finals while the remainder will be determined only after a Repechage round raced on Friday.
Qualifying Series racing resumes tomorrow at 0930 CDT on courses set at Belmont Harbor.
